For about 20 years, I worked retail. Wait, I take that back, I worked retail for 15 years, and fast food for the 5 years before that! It wasn't exactly what I had in mind when I was 7, and hoping to be a super hero when I grew up.

I was sort of apprehensive about making the call, as I've always been warned that things that seem to good to be true - usually are - but I had to give it a try. I called. Sadly, I didn't get through, but I left a message saying I was seeking more information about the job listed in the classified section.

The next morning I was greeted by a friendly woman, who sounded to be in her 30's or 40's, and she wanted to answer any questions that I had about being a mystery shopper. She began by informing me that this was indeed a legitimate job offer, and that I would be paid $350 a week base salary, plus commission on any job that I took, and of course, the free stuff that I got to buy with the money. But What Does A Mystery Shopper Do?

A mystery shopper is hired by the company in which the mystery shopper is needed. The mystery shopper then proceeds to pretend to be a normal customer, and they observe what happens when they make certain requests, or just to observe the store in general, and to write down what your thoughts of it were, after you leave.

Generally, mystery shoppers are hired by retail stores, or restaurants. Here is a sample of both...

At restaurants, you are generally given 3-4 choices of what to order, and you are instructed to observe the server (or the cashier in a fast food restuarant), and be on the lookout to see if they use certain "buzzwords" that the company requires them to, observe their dress and behavior, and rate your overall experience. Easy, and a free meal!

If it's a store, then you generally buy things, and then are instructed to look, or listen for certain things. One example would be, buying a video game, and then observing the employee who sold it to you to make sure they were knowledgeable about the product, answered all of your questions properly, was well dressed/groomed, and asked at checkout if you'd like to reserve a copy of "x" or would like to purchase the one year warranty. Simple, and I got to keep the video game!
